Buying a first bra made blooming easy:

Finding the right first bra can be a tough task for both mum and daughter.

Melbourne mum and co-founder of BlossyBloom, Josie Chapman, experienced the difficulty of shopping for her daughter’s first bra first-hand. Mother and daughter struggled to find a bra they both approved of.

Josie did not want to buy a padded bra for her daughter, but any bra that Josie picked out for her daughter to try on was met with a cry of “but that’s something Nanna would wear!”

Josie and her daughter searched many shops but found nothing.

After the frustrating experience, Josie chatted with other mums, including friends Rebekah Hancock and Jo Konstandinou about how dismayed she felt with the lack of training bra options available. She found out she was not alone.

So many other mums found the whole first bra business for their daughters just as frustrating.

It was then that these three mums realised the need for comfy, stylish bras that both mums and daughters would love - and agree on!

This led them to create BlossyBloom which was officially ‘born’ in January last year.

BlossyBloom create beautiful bras made for ‘young blossoms’without padding or underwire from sizes 8A to 14B.

“Our mantra is girls are perfect just the way they are. We don’t believe that we should make girls look older or more developed,” says Josie.

The BlossyBloom range is age-appropriate with colours and designs that suit girls in the 10-14 year age bracket.

“Girls can be quite mortified at the changes happening in their body, and when a bra is padded, making the girl look bigger than she actually is, this can cause even more embarrassment,” says Josie.

The BlossyBloom mums believe that getting your first bra should be an exciting time, and it is a lovely opportunity for mums and daughters to share this moment together.

“Some girls will be happy to go shopping, and it is advantageous for your daughter to be fitted professionally for a bra. But don’t be upset if she does not want you in the change room with her,” Josie advises.

“Just wait for her to give you the signal for when she is ready for you to come in.”

BlossyBloom has stockists in a number of states which you can check here.

But if your daughter is not comfortable going to the shops, or there is limited choice for bra stores in your area, you can purchase BlossyBloom online. There is a virtual fitting room and all you need is a measuring tape.

"Just measure around the torso just under the breast, and across the top of the breast and put the info into the online calculator and it will give you the right size. Then you and your daughter can look through the different colours and patterns and choose the ones she likes.”

The bras are wrapped in tissue paper and placed in a BlossyBloom bag with a little affirmation card attached.

“She then gets to try them on in private and if the size is not quite right, BlossyBloom will exchange free of charge,” Josie says.
