Being pregnant during winter may be a blessing compared to being heavily pregnant during summer, but once your winter baby comes along you have 18 years of winter birthday parties ahead of you and this is where things can get more challenging.

While summer parties often revolve around the backyard, beach or playground, planning a winter kids party can be more difficult.

Cold temperatures and rain can put a dampener on even the best planned outdoor kids parties, but unless you have a huge house and endless patience, it can seem like the only other option is to pay a fortune for 10 toddlers or pre-schoolers to run around a grubby indoor play centre for two hours.

Believe it or not there are other options for entertaining your baby or toddler and their friends when it’s cold and wintry outside. Winter parties have undergone a bit of a revival lately and with a bit of creativity it is more than possible to put on a fun and memorable kids party, let the little ones burn off some energy and not go insane in the process.

Here are a few of our favourite winter party ideas:

  • Teddy Bear’s Tea party: Why not put on your own high tea for your little one and their guests? Ask each guest to bring their favourite furry companion, serve up finger food and ‘tea’ in pots and make cute decorations for the table.
  • Detective party: Encourage the little ones to embrace their inner Sherlock Holmes with a detective party. Create a ‘crime scene’ and plant clues around the house. The first guest to solve the crime wins a prize.
  • Camping: For a sleepover with a difference, why not take the kids indoor camping? Set up tents in the living room with sleeping bags, turn off the lights and give everyone torches. Serve up camping treats like smores and tell stories around a pretend campfire.
  • Glow in the dark party: This is a great way to pass those dark winter evenings. Invest in some glow in the dark face paint, get a bunch of glow sticks and turn your home into a magical, glow in the dark wonderland. You can even make glow in the dark play-doh to occupy the little ones and add to the lights-off fun.
  • Treasure hunt party: Depending on how much space you have, a great way to host an indoor party without it getting too out of hand is to create a scavenger hunt throughout your house. Hide clues, divide the little ones up into groups and have them scour your space for goodies.

Just because it’s cold and grey outside, you don’t have to limit your fun! When it comes to creating the perfect winter party you are only restricted by your imagination. Check out some more winter party ideas along with a list of other must-try winter trends here.
