Funtastic summer ideas for families cover

The summer is almost here and while it means a stretch of lazy days and endless playtime for little ones, it can be a tough time for parents. It is easy to forget that kids need entertaining throughout this period. There’s only so long that you can keep them occupied with cartoons and Lego bricks. Besides, it’s important to get them outdoors and enjoying the good weather.

If you have a hard time coming up with exciting summer activities, it’s time to get creative and think outside of the box. You don’t need a lot of money or a big house; there are plenty of fun things that you can do for free or on a small budget. For those with limited space, day trips are a great idea, because they also stop the kids from trashing the house in the process.

This fun-tastic guide to the best summer activities, from Open Air Events, will give you a little bit of inspiration.

Family Camping

Everybody remembers their very first camping trip. The sound of the trees, the sight of the moon, and the sensation of being in the belly of nature are all unforgettable. They can be experienced right in your own backyard too if you have a little bit of imagination. Send the kids garden camping with a tent, sleeping bags, flashlights, and a bag of marshmallows.

Make Your Own Pizzas

Cooking with little ones can be lots of fun, but you need to pick recipes that aren’t too challenging. Pizzas are a wonderful choice because they can simply add their own toppings to a precooked base. Let them have full control over what they want to add and how they want to do it. Think smiley faces with pepperoni, bright veggies, and plenty of cheese.

Celebrate Australia Day

There’s nothing quite like getting all the friends and family around for a backyard party to celebrate Australia Day. Hire a marquee if you’re afraid the weather will turn, get the barbecue going, throw around the footy with the kids and kick back and relax. Have the children decorate the marquee with green and gold bunting, teach them Waltzing Matilda and celebrate Aussie pride in style this January 26th. Not only will the kids have a great time, but the adults too!

Get the Board Games Out

Board games are an entertaining choice for those long summer afternoons and evenings in the garden. Whether your poison is Pictionary, Scrabble, Tumblin’ Monkeys, or Hungry Hippos; the chance to get competitive will energise and delight young children.

Head to a Petting Farm

Zoo admission prices are very expensive these days, particularly if you have more than one child to pay for. However, lots of working farms open their doors to visitors during the summer. They invite youngsters to get up close and personal with the cows, sheep, chickens, and goats. They’ll learn a lot and have a fun time meeting their favourite animals.

Go On a Nature Walk

Wherever you are in Australia, you’re never too far from Mother Nature. This country is filled to the brim with national parks, gorgeous woodland, beautiful lakes, and fantastic nature reserves. Don’t let it go to waste. Head into the wild and find yourself a little slice of the wild.

Host a Sleepover

Letting the kids invite a small number of friends over for the night is a good way to take the pressure off. You don’t have to constantly entertain them; they’ll keep each other happy. Plus, the chances are that another parent will return the favour and you’ll get a night to yourself.

Create a Backyard Cinema

You can pick up a cheap movie projector for next to nothing these days. And all you need to screen your own films is a big white bedsheet in the garden. Hang it over the clothesline and, as soon as it gets dark, you’ve got a mini cinema screen. Drag some blankets and snacks out for a terrific family evening.

Why Imagination Can Go a Long Way This Summer

It doesn’t matter how you choose to spend your lazy, hazy summer days. Whether it’s in a grand event marquee for a big garden party, in the middle of a nature park, or just in the backyard; the important thing is that you spend it together. Encourage your little ones to engage their brains and step away from consoles and television screens for a while. The summer should be a place for magic, mayhem, and endless possibilities.
