UPDATED Saturday. In case you've missed it - how? - Ellen DeGeneres and her partner, Australian actor Portia de Rossi, and Ellen's mother, touched down in Australia yesterday.

They started with a tour of Sydney Harbour via an ordinary ferry with a private Indigenous welcome to the country ceremony on Friday. The ceremony was performed on board the ferry by Tracy Keys, the first Aboriginal deckhand for the Sydney Ferries Corporation and a regular crew member. The crew were really impressed with Ellen and her group, as "they didn't ask for anything fancy" - like some celebrities.

Unfortunately for tourism purposes, after days of gorgeous autumn weather and cloudless blue skies, Friday in Sydney is very warm, windy and overcast.

After a quick tour around the Harbour, they visited the iconic Taronga Zoo where the trio fed the giraffes and visited koalas. Along the way, Ellen has been tweeting what she's up to - including her 'discovery' of Australian coffee such as 'flat white' and 'long black'.

She also tweeted to Sydneysiders to get along to the Fleet Steps at the Opera on the Harbour at the Botanical Gardens Saturday morning from 6am where "the fun starts at noon". DeGeneres especially named the starting time to try to prevent fans from turning up Friday night to the Opera House and disturbing the performance of Carmen by Opera Australia.

Ellen is staying in the penthouse suite of the InterContinental Hotel, not far from the Opera House and Botanical Gardens. Previous VIP guests include the President George W Bush for the APEC Summit in 2007. If Ellen's looking for some national sporting pride during her visit, she's at the right place as the Socceroos are also staying at the InterContinental: they meet Oman in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.

The Prime Minister who, on Friday morning, was on the Kyle and Jacki O Show on Sydney radio, also got in on the Ellen visit, tweeting her welcome to the American star.

Hundreds of fans, estimated to form a queue of more than 300 metres, lined-up to be part of The Ellen Show on Saturday morning from way before 6am as Ellen had requested. The taping of the show began shortly after midday with the first 3,000 people in the queue able to be part of it. Ellen continued tweeting throughout the morning inviting people to join the fun, and commenting on the "beautiful day". Unlike yesterday, Sydney weather is not overcast today: it's very warm and very humid with a bright blue sky after a minimum overnight of around 24 degrees Celsius.
