Who will take home the Gold Logie?:

History suggests either Home and Away beauty Esther Anderson or highly-versatile actor Asher Keddie will claim the coveted Gold Logie at tonight's awards ceremony at Melbourne's Crown Casino.

Since 1997, 11 actors have taken home the Gold Logie for TV's Most Popular Personality compared with just two presenters/hosts; Rove McManus (2003, 2004 and 2005) and last year's winner Karl Stefanovic.

The Today Show's (Nine Network) host Stefanovic is again a Gold Logie nominee as are hosts Carrie Bickmore (The Project, Network Ten), Adam Hills (Gordon St Tonight, ABC1) and comedian Hamish Blake (Hamish & Andy's Gap Year, Nine Network).

The Logie awards were once dominated by presenter/hosts such as Graham Kennedy (1960, 1967, 1969, 1974, 1978) and Ray Martin (1987, 1993-1996) - both winning five Gold Logies each.

Kennedy was also the inaugural recipient of the initial TV Week Star of The Year in 1959, which technically makes it six gongs.

But it now appears soapie and drama stars have a much stronger following these days with those inclined to vote rather than merely watch the awards.

In the past 15 years, TV soapie and drama sweethearts Lisa McCune have won four straight (1997-2000) Gold Logies, while Georgie Parker (2001-2002) and Kate Ritchie (2007-2008) had back-to-back glory.

If being continually nominated counts for anything, Hills may be in with a chance.

He's up for his fifth straight nomination and Keddie her second in succession.

"They may just feel sorry for me and go 'here you are, have it,'" Hills told AAP.

Already comparisons are being made between Hills and former A Country Practice star John Woods who was nominated for 11 consecutive Gold Logies (1997-2007) and claimed just one in 2006.

There is a chance though for Hills to accept four Logies on the night.

He's also been nominated for a Silver Logie as Most Popular Presenter and his show Spicks & Specks, which wrapped in 2011 after seven seasons, is in the running for the Most Popular Light Entertainment Program, as well as being nominated for the peer-voted Outstanding Light Entertainment Program.

If he wins the main trophy it will break a 36-year hoodoo for the ABC and it would also be only the fourth Gold Logie for the station.

Garry McDonald's alter ego Norman Gunston last brought home a Gold Logie for the ABC in 1976 while the station's other two winners were Michael Charlton (Four Corners) in 1963 and Lorrae Desmond (The Lorrae Desmond Show) in 1962.

Keddie is also nominated for two Silver Logies; Most Popular Actress, which she won last year, and Most Outstanding Actress.

Parker, McManus and Ritchie will be among the TV personalities who will walk the red carpet before thousands of fans on Sunday night.

This year's awards could have an added mass-hysteria factor with British boy band One Direction who are performing a special pre-red carpet gig to 400 fans. There are fears thousands of teenagers will flock to Melbourne's Crown Casino for a glimpse of their UK idols.

The entertainment line-up for the 2012 Logies ceremony is impressive.

One Direction will also perform during the telecast as will Grammy Award-winning soul singer Seal, while Flo Rida will belt out his hit Good Feeling.

Evergreen crooner Tony Bennett will also grace the stage and Delta Goodrem will use her appearance to perform her latest single Sitting On Top Of The World.

* The Logie Awards will be broadcast on the Nine Network at 7.30pm tonight.
