Young people aged between 16 and 23 years who are living with epilepsy will have a chance to hear and learn from others at a national youth E-event to be held in Sydney at the end of September.

It’s part of Epilepsy Action Australia’s three-year focus on adolescents and young adults with epilepsy.

Around 70 young people with epilepsy will take part in a 3-day residential program providing a mix of activities – including physical activity, creation of video clips, presentations, discussion and some fun. The E-event will also include a forum to explore the impact of epilepsy on young people and help to build confidence and resilience.

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition affecting up to 2% of the population. 90,000 young people are affected by it.

It occurs when normal electrochemical activity of the brain is disrupted, potentially resulting in seizures. Epilepsy is diagnosed when someone has recurrent seizures and is more likely to be diagnosed in childhood or senior years. According to Epilepsy Action Australia, more than 70% of people with epilepsy can live seizure-free with medication.

“The areas of a young person’s life affected by epilepsy can range from educational challenges, employment difficulties, loss of driver license, financial difficulties, as well as mental health and behavioural concerns,” according to the CEO of Epilepsy Action Australia, Carol Ireland.

“Despite the high prevalence of epilepsy in youth and its significant impact, there is scarce data or research on youth with epilepsy in Australia, and public awareness on this issue is low.

“Our National Youth E-vent will engage youth with epilepsy to explore and communicate challenges of living with epilepsy,” Ms Ireland says.

Attendees from around Australia will have their travel and accommodation fully funded by Epilepsy Action Australia.

If you know a young person, aged 16-23 years, living with epilepsy who would like to register for the E-event, please call 1300 37 45 37 or send an email to epilepsy@epilepsy.org.au
