5 hospital bag essentials:

We all know about the basics to pack in a bag ready for the mad dash to hospital, but what about the other essentials?

As much as it might be nice, we can’t all be like Kate Middleton. In hospital one moment; baby born in less than three hours; out of there in the next eight. If only … smile

We wonder whether she even packed a hospital bag like the rest of us do in preparation for the moment when we really need to stop what we’re doing and get there?

Beyond the toiletries, spare underwear, casual tracky-daks and gorgeous baby clothes, what do you really need? We've been there and done that, so  there’s our top five packing list for all the mums-to-be.

1.  A towel that’s your own

Even in private hospitals with hotel-type birthing suits, the towels are not fluffy and they have that ‘mass laundry’ smell – let alone in a public hospital where they do everything so well but efficiently. You deserve more than a threadbare, slightly antiseptic smelling towel, so take one that smells like heavenly scents of home and is beautifully fluffy.

2.  A set of ear plugs

This isn’t about cutting out your baby’s noises. If you’re in a private room, this isn’t so necessary. But if you’re sharing, it helps not only to cut out the noise from your neighbour but also to ensure you don’t annoy your neighbour if you want to watch television or listen to a playlist.

3.  Dry shampoo

You’re probably not going to feel like washing your hair, but chances are you may feel as if it needs washing. There’s some good dry shampoos on the market which will help make your hair look good and you feel better, especially when the relatives come calling and all want a photo.

4.  Your favourite playlist

Make sure you’ve got your music sorted with all your favourite songs and other musical pieces. It will help you relax, help you smile – and it’s something to remember years later, for example, at your baby’s wedding!

5.  Chargers

Quite simply, you can never have too many. Put them in the bag now and don’t think about them again till you’re in hospital unpacking it, and realise what a great tip this was!

Happy days!
