Move to punish parents of school truants:

The parents of school truants face stiffer penalties under new laws being drafted by the Victorian government.

The Herald Sun says regional offices of the Education Department will be able to fine families without the need to go through the courts.

The paper says students in Victoria miss almost eight million days a year, or three weeks per child, and under current laws, which carry a fine of $122, not a single parent has been made accountable.

State Education Minister Martin Dixon is drafting laws to make it easier to penalise repeat offenders.

"Despite an enormous amount of work by schools and the department, there are still some parents who believe it is OK not to send their children to school," he said.

What do you think of the stiffer penalties?
