Here's what you need to know before getting a facial

When concerning healthy skin, one of the most patronized and basic treatments is the facial, yet many of us don't understand how it benefits our skin and the steps taken by the professional to get our skin to behave. Facials are a type of skin treatment that cleanses the pores, exfoliates dead skin cells, and treats various skin concerns. A typical treatment makes use of mild products such as cleansers, exfoliators, and masks, which work together in a multistep process to nourish and rejuvenate your face, giving you a younger and healthier appearance.

We have put together a brief explanation of the three major aspects of a facial to enable you to better understand what your expert does whenever you book that appointment.

Preparation & Cleansing

In some beauty salons, clients have to wear a robe before entering the facial treatment room. This is to prevent stains from getting on your clothes. If you plan on having other services provided, you might be given a head start on a shoulder massage and a foot bath, for example. Once you're lying on the bed, your esthetician may warm you up by giving you a brisk shoulder and face massage with some oils.

The next step is cleansing. This is usually done with a special yet mild soap and some instructions. Depending on your skin type, you might be given a different kind of cleanser for your face. In some cases, the practitioner might tell you to lie still while the esthetician washes your face for you.

Exfoliation & Steaming

After thoroughly cleansing your sensitive skin, exfoliation follows. This is done either with a mild exfoliator or an actual scrub. The product is applied onto your face and is massaged into it for some minutes to help get rid of all the dead skin cells and other skin impurities that aren't visible to the naked eye. Once the scrub has done its job, you're ready for steaming, which is a great way to prepare your skin for extraction. The steam applied to your face helps open up your skin pores, making it easier for all skin impurities to come out. Estheticians use a steamer for up to 15 minutes.

Extraction & Finishing Up

Once the steaming and exfoliation sessions are complete, extraction is the next step. This step is scary for many, but the truth is when done by a professional, you hardly feel a thing. Your esthetician removes all kinds of impurities during the extraction process, from blackheads to mild acne and even whiteheads. Any form of acne that's about to burst (or pimples that aren't ready to be popped) is left unchanged. Likewise, anything too deep for them to gain access to is referred to a dermatologist for further extraction.

To end your facial session, you might have a cold towel placed on your face to close up your pores, or your esthetician might apply a mild laser on your face over a gauze mask. If you're up for it, you can add one last step, which is the use of facial masks or chemical peels. These can be considered depending on your skin concerns.

Facials are a great way to treat skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and mild acne. Thanks to the massaging component, a facial gives your skin a new glow and leaves you feeling more relaxed than ever. The best part of facials is that everyone can enjoy them, whether male or female, as experts are well versed in male skin issues such as ingrown hairs, razor burns, sensitivity, and dullness. Always trust your esthetician to recommend the best facial for you
