It’s Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday and we’re being encouraged to take the opportunity to clean out old phones, TVs and other gadgets sitting in the cupboard.

Research shows more than 3 in 5 (62%) Australians are more likely to stash away old electronics than throw them in the rubbish (38%).

And it appears young Australians (18-34 year olds) are most guilty when it comes to stashing outdated electronics. Nearly 3 out of 4 (72%) stockpile old electronics, compared to 57% of their elders.

“The truth is many people don't get rid of electronics because they think they'll have a use for them again, but let's face it, technology is moving at such a rapid pace that most gadgets become obsolete before the need arises,” says 1800 GotJunk’s Tania Venn.

“Flip phones aren't making a comeback, clean out your drawers and do something useful with your junk.”

The Clean Up Australia campaign reveals what your contribution can accomplish:

  • For every mobile phone returned, $3 is donated to Clean Up Australia to fund future campaigns.
  • Up to 90% of greenhouse gases created by the production of new phones can be prevented by using recycled devices.
  • 300 grams of gold is salvaged from roughly one tonne of recycled mobile phones.
