Want to be close to Melbourne but simply cannot deal with the hustle and bustle of big city life? Perhaps you hate the traffic, or you simply want to be able to buy a house that has a backyard for your family to spend time in that doesn't cost over a million dollars? Maybe you just want a tree change but don't want to give up the convenience that a big city offers? Well, we've got you covered. Check out our list of beautiful country towns below, select your favourite, and get house hunting!

Ocean Grove

A beautiful seaside oasis on the Bellarine Peninsula, Ocean Grove is a high-growth area that provides luxury living a stone's throw from the city. If sipping your coffee while watching the sun rise over the sea sounds like heaven to you, reach out to some fantastic builders in Ocean Grove and see what they have to offer.

Kyneton

If you prefer a cooler climate, Kyneton could be the perfect place to settle down. Just over an hour from Melbourne, this boutique town in the Macedon Ranges has super easy access to the Calder freeway for a straight run into the city. It is renowned for having some of the most beautiful historic buildings in the state. The town is also located in one of Victoria's best wine regions so if you enjoy a drop with a beautiful aromatic twist, this is definitely the town for you.

Healesville

Known for its Wildlife Sanctuary, Healesville has a lot to offer those looking for a tree change. Located to the north of Melbourne, this town is another that can boast about its wine while also offering fabulous appeal for lovers of art and culture.

Ballarat

Want somewhere that's on the bigger side and provides all the convenience of city living without having to deal with the nightmare that is Melbourne traffic during peak hour? Consider moving to Ballarat.

Only an hour and a half from the heart of the city, Ballarat is known for evolving from a gold rush town into a rural hub in its own right. Much like Kyneton, it's a little chilly, but you'll absolutely love it when summer comes around and you've got a couple of degrees of relief over everyone else.

Castlemaine

If you're looking to go a little further out, Castlemaine could be just what the doctor ordered. Known for its deep historical roots and gold rush history, Castlemaine is now a hub for lovers of art, culture, and delicious food. You'll also enjoy relatively low housing costs compared to many other parts of the state and can jump on the Calder freeway fairly easily if you're looking to head down to Melbourne for the day.

Phillip Island

Home of the Penguin Parade, Phillip Island is close enough to Melbourne that it's considered quite a popular day trip while still being far enough away that you can relax and unwind without worrying about the 24/7 "on" lifestyle that comes with big city life. It's also Victoria's first surfing reserve, so if waking up and riding a wave sounds like your idea of a good morning, this could be the place for you.

Do any of these six stunning places spark your interest? If so, why not head down for a day trip to learn a little more. If you like what you see, all that's left to do is find the right home and get packing. You can enjoy the beach, the mountains, or the bush – all within reach of the best galleries, shops, restaurants, and coffee roasters Melbourne has to offer.
