5 Simple Ways You Can Freshen Up Your Living Room:

It's time to declutter your living room.

Does your living room need a refresh? Are you sick of staring at magnolia walls and tired furniture? If so, you are not alone. Most people decorate every four years. That’s long enough for trends to change and walls to begin looking scuffed and tired. But if your living room is still rocking an 80s look or you are bitterly regretting the lime-green paint you bought in a discount deal two years ago, we have some ideas to help you freshen up your living room.

Declutter the Room

Clutter is a nightmare. It attracts dust, pet hair, and makes a room look untidy even when it’s not. If you want to freshen up your living room, removing all extraneous clutter is a good place to begin.

Be ruthless. Recycle, bin, or sell anything you don’t need or haven’t looked at in years. Books are a possible exception, as books instantly make a room feel cosy. But old magazines, cheap ornaments, and general mess should be cleared out and disposed of in an appropriate way.

Trust us, your room will feel a thousand times fresher once you clear away the clutter.

Spring Clean

With all that clutter out of the way, put some tunes on, and start cleaning. Use eco-friendly ingredients like white vinegar and lemon to remove dirt and grime from hard surfaces. A few hours of hard work and your living room will look and smell better.

Whitewash the Walls

Colours come and go, so if you decide to paint your walls the latest Pantone colour of the year (Classic Blue for 2020), chances are you’ll be sick to death of it pretty soon. It’s been popular in recent years to have a feature wall, usually in a dark and/or vibrant colour. This is great, but you’re still going to be sick of it sooner rather than later.

It’s a much better idea to paint your walls brilliant white, so they act as a blank canvas for your furniture, decorative accessories, and artwork.

Many Australian homes are blessed with plenty of natural light. White walls enhance the light and make a room feel bright and airy. Slap some white paint over your walls and the room will instantly seem bigger.

Decorative Features

There are many ways to add some decorative touches to a room. Artwork is a classic example. Create a picture wall using a selection of prints, photos, or paintings in similar frames. This makes the display feel more cohesive. For example, if you have a passion for the ocean, curate some seascape prints, photos of surfers, and paintings and hang them all in black frames on a white wall.

Aside from artwork, be creative and look for accessories that are both useful and decorative. Clocks are a good example. A website like Oh Clocks has a great selection of decorative clocks to suit any room. A large clock on the wall is useful and eye-catching. You could even create a talking point with a collection of different clocks on one wall.

Colour helps us to personalise a room. A red cushion here or a green rug there all make a room feel more like home. Pick a colour you like and look for accessories in various shades and tones within that colour range. For example, if yellow is your go-to colour, shop for sofa cushions in a selection of shades such as yellow ochre, lemon, and orange/yellow.

Sofa throws in your chosen colour can be used to revive a tired sofa. Pick matching blinds or add a pop of colour with a rug on natural wooden floors. Lamps are also handy ways to introduce colour into a room.

Be adventurous in your outlook but don’t be a slave to the latest design trends, or you’ll end up having to start again in 2-3 years.
