Household plants are a joy to look at and be around, plus they help to improve air quality and reduce stress. They can also contribute to a more positive wellbeing overall. Perhaps most interesting of all, it is believed that certain plants can even bring good luck, wealth, prosperity and health.

Regardless of your beliefs, taking on this mindset can really put a fun, creative spin on the process of decorating your home. Here are 7 household plants that look fantastic, are easy to care for, and may one day reward you with extraordinary luck.

Lucky Bamboo

Despite the name, this plant isn’t actually bamboo but a type of dracaena. It’s known as a lucky plant as the arrangement of the plant itself – in particular, the number of stalks – has different meanings according to Feng Shui principles. For instance, three stalks brings you happiness, longevity and wealth; five brings you wealth; six brings you luck; seven brings good health; and so forth.

Lucky bamboo is an easy-to-care-for indoor plant. For best results keep the plant indoors facing low, indirect light. If you plan on growing the plant in water, be sure to replace the water every two to four weeks.

Money Tree (Pachira aquatic)

The name ‘money tree’ refers to the plant’s origin story. The story goes a poor man prayed for money, found this particular plant, brought it home and nurtured to good health, and earned a fortune by selling the plants that come from its own seeds.

Based on this story, it is believed if a money tree is placed in an area concerned with money (i.e. business), the owner will be graced with wealth and fortune. Better still, if your plant happens to have seven leaves on each stem, according to Feng Shui that’s a sign of extra luck.

Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis Orchid)

Legend has it the moth orchid represents love. They are also known to attract the soul and deepen friendships. For this reason, the plant is a popular Valentines Gift. So, if you’re looking to spoil that special someone, give them a bouquet of orchids to show how much you care.

Regarded as the easiest orchid to grow, this gorgeous plant will bloom for several months and re-bloom with very little effort. Just give them plenty of sunlight, hydrate the roots (use a bark mix to promote good drainage), and they’ll brighten up your day for years to come.

Jade Plant

Jade by the door, poor no more! This old saying is based on the belief that, if a jade plant is placed by the front entrance, it will welcome money into your home. That’s why the jade plant is often found at the front of Chinese restaurants and other places of business: to attract new customers. No wonder the jade plant is a popular gift for business owners!

Rubber Plant (ficus elastic)

According to the principles of Feng Sheui the round leaves of a rubber plant symbolise wealth, good fortune and prosperity. No wonder this plant is a popular gift for new business
owners!

There are also health benefits for owning a rubber plant too. According to research from NASA, the plant can purify the air and remove harmful bacteria. The leaves do this naturally by drawing in air and contaminants; which are then drawn through the plant, deposited into the soil, and converted into plant nutrients or soil compounds.

Roses

Roses aren’t just a symbol of love. In fact, different coloured roses have their own specific meanings attached to them. So they’ve been known to bring out all kinds of emotional responses from people.

For instance, yellow roses are associated with feelings of warmth, joy and cheer. While orange roses promote a high level of energy, enthusiasm and excitement. If you plan on buying roses, don’t be afraid to spice things up by mixing different colours together. You’ll be amazed at just how creative you can get with the classic rose.

Honeysuckle

The honeysuckle plant has a sweet smelling fragrance that will delight your senses. It can also bring a healthy dose of good luck too.

Keep in mind, honeysuckles do require a bit more work than other plants on this list. While not invasive, the plant is considered a weed in all parts of Australia .If not maintained, they can quickly grow as thick ground cover or dense shroud, which can overwhelm supporting structures and other plants.

Be sure to consult your local nursery for advice on how to tame this beautiful yet unwieldly plant.
