If you ask any dermatologist to name the top 5 treatments they recommend the most, microneedling will be somewhere near the top of the list.

Over the last few years, this minimally invasive cosmetic treatment has seen a boom in popularity. It’s a collagen-boosting treatment that can be used anywhere on the body, from stretch marks on your legs to fine lines and wrinkles on your face.

So what does microneedling involve, and is it a good option for a mommy makeover?

Let’s find out.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that involves tiny needles being inserted into the skin to create micro-wounds. When these tiny needles puncture the dermis, the body increases collagen production to heal the area, resulting in firmer, stronger, and younger-looking skin.

You can use an at-home derma roller, but the most effective type of microneedling uses a DermaPen and must be performed by a professional.

What Are the Benefits?

In recent years, there have been a bunch of studies looking into the benefits of microneedling.

According to a 2018 clinical review published in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, microneedling is a safe and effective way to treat a range of skin conditions, including scarring and fine lines and wrinkles.

The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends microneedling as a treatment for reducing the appearance of large pores, stretch marks, scars, and visible signs of ageing.

Microneedling has become more widely known and popular due to several Hollywood celebrities praising the treatment on social media.

What Happens During a Microneedling Session?

First, your clinician will cleanse your skin to prepare it for treatment. They will then use a DermaPen device to create pinpricks on the surface of the skin. The punctures are so small you won’t be able to notice them in the mirror following treatment.

The DermaPen is moved evenly across the area being treated to ensure even coverage and rejuvenation. The whole treatment takes around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Your clinician may apply a serum following treatment to calm the skin and revitalise the skin. Because of the tiny punctures in the dermis, the active ingredients in the serum can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and be more impactful.

How Long Does It Take To See Results From Microneedling?

You may notice an immediate improvement in the days following your first session. However, optimal results are usually achieved after a series of 4-6 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart.

Depending on the severity of the skin concern you want to treat, results may include a mild improvement to a more transformational enhancement. Generally, people in their 30s and 40s respond best to microneedling.

Are There Any Side Effects?

You should attend a consultation with a professional before you consider microneedling. This is true for both at-home and in-clinic procedures. In addition, some medications and conditions can mean that microneedling isn’t a suitable treatment option.

Side effects from microneedling are mild but can include redness and a sensation similar to sunburn for up to 24 hours post-treatment. You should avoid sun exposure, strenuous exercise, and saunas or hot baths for 24 hours following micro-needling.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

No. When performed by a trained clinician, microneedling should not hurt. You may experience mild irritation in the area for a few hours after treatment, but there is no downtime or pain associated with microneedling.

Most reports of pain and side effects come from at-home micro-needling that has gone wrong. If you apply too much pressure, the derma roller can scratch and irritate the skin. In some cases, this can result in bleeding and even scarring.

How To Prepare for the Treatment?

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for a microneedling session. However, there are a few guidelines that will help you to maximise results and minimise the risk of side effects.

If you are taking blood-thinning medication, you should consult your doctor before having microneedling. In addition, if you are prone to cold sores, you should ask your doctor about using an antibiotic to reduce the risk of an outbreak following treatment.

You should also avoid sun exposure and protect your skin using an SPF 30 sun cream to prevent sunburn that could make the treatment painful and affect your results.

Is It the Perfect Mommy Makeover?

If you’re looking for a cosmetic treatment to rejuvenate your skin with minimal downtime, microneedling could be a great option. You can have a session in less than an hour of free time and immediately return to your daily routine. It’s a fast and effective treatment that fits in with your busy lifestyle.
