Confused about Mother’s Day?:

What mothers want on Mother's Day seems to depend on who you're talking to.

Just who do you believe when it comes to the war of Mother’s Day surveys and what mum’s want?

An online kids events guide, Ella’s List, says that “dads can relax” because what mum’s want most is breakfast in bed or a day out with the family – as long as they don’t have to organise it. But P&O Cruises say that when asked if they were treated to breakfast in bed, a romantic dinner or a day off from household chores, nearly half said ‘no’.

P&O Cruises also say that almost two-thirds of mums put their Mother’s Day gifts away and never look at them again, while in the true spirit of ‘mum being the word’, one-quarter of them don’t let on they don’t like it.

Of course, P&O Cruises solution to this is to buy mum a cruise for Mother’s Day. According to P&O’s CEO, Ann Sherry, mums should be “spoilt rotten” on Mother’s Day.

“On Mother’s Day of all days mums should be getting pampered in every way and given a break from the usual daily grind,” Ms Sherry said.

A cruise is one way to get out of the cooking and cleaning for a while which is the reason almost half of mums say they would like a cruise according to P&O.

But more than one-third of the mothers who responded to the survey by Ella’s List said they didn’t really enjoy Mother’s Day as they felt it had become over-commercialised and family members felt pressure to give presents and arrange the perfect day.

Rather than receive more help with the day-to-day tasks of cooking, cleaning and childcare, mums would prefer “more romance” according to the founder of Ella’s List, Yvette DuBourdieu.

“Dads around the country can heave a collective sigh of relief – it’s not about maxing out the credit card on pricey gifts, but a desire to go ‘back to basics’ to celebrate Mother’s Day and throughout the year and that even includes bumping up the romance too!”

Given a list of names of famous mothers P&O’s surveyed mums would like to spend the day with, the standout choice was Michelle Obama with 22%, followed by Maggie Beer (18%) and Nicole Kidman (15%). Victoria Beckham was the least popular choice with 2%.
