Have we lost our trust?:

Lack of trust in government at a record high.

The level of trust in the Australian Government is at an all time low according to new research from Roy Morgan Research.

60% of Australians say “I don’t trust the current Australian Government” – up from 53% one year ago and almost double the number since March 2009.

It is the highest level of mistrust in the Australian Government since June 2001 – before the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States that included the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York and an attack on the US Pentagon in Washington DC.

When Kevin Rudd was elected Prime Minister in November 2007, trust in the Australian Government increased sharply but it has declined steadily since the end of 2009.

According to Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan Research, the news gets no better for the government led by Julia Gillard.

“Only 30% of Australians (down from 57% three years ago) agree that “The Government is doing a good job running the country” – a record low.”

Levine said this is the lowest measure of Government confidence since the question was first asked in 2000.

“It has also fallen heavily since the middle of 2009 when nearly 60% of Australians agreed with the statement.

“These results suggest the Gillard Government faces an uphill struggle to win re-election at next year’s Federal Election,” Levine said.
