Coles Supermarket Group has announced the launch of a range of 90 ‘Simply Less’ healthy food options to encourage Australians to choose healthier food options. The ‘Simply Less’ range was developed in response to Coles customer research which highlighted Australian’s concerns regarding both health and the cost of living.

The ‘Simply Less’ products are an average of at least 15 per cent cheaper than the leading brand equivalent. The range includes ready-made meals and snacks, dairy products, cereals and guilt-free treats that have been developed by chefs and nutritionists.

Coles said that their consumer research found that 1 in 2 Australians are currently trying to lose weight, and that a significant number (86 per cent) would like to purchase healthier food but a majority of them don't do so because of price.

“Our research indicated that Australians are looking for a healthier and tastier option for less. With a price point set at least 15% cheaper than the equivalent leading branded product, Coles Simply Less will change this category by proving that quality food does not need to hurt the hips or the hip pocket,” said Simon McDowell, Coles Group Director, Marketing.

The Coles ‘Simply Less’ range is available in stores now.

Today I tried the Coles Simply Less brand Sweet Chilli Prawn Noodles. I am sorry to say I was very much disappointed by the taste. There was way too much sugar in it and hardly any flavor. It seemed more like a desert, than a meal to me. This was the first Simply Less Coles product I tried, and I don’t think I will ever try any other Coles Simply Less Product.

I have recently purchased Coles Simply Less Caesar salad dressing. It has no flavour and in no way tastes like a regular or low-fat Caesar dressing. Its texture is gooey and its colour is decidedly anaemic. For the benefit of Coles’ reputation, this product should immediately be removed from the shelves.

Last night I tried Coles Simply Less Sweet Chilli Prawn Noodles. It was a fantastic - full of veges and plenty of prawns. The flavour was spicy and delicious. Will definately be purchasing this range and re-thinking my cooking/eating habits if these frozen ready-meals remain great value.

I bought the Coles Simply Less Dark Chocolate Mousse and the Dark Chocolate with Sweet Orange for my family to try. The amount of cocoa in the products was an adjustment, but we were all pleasantly surprised with the taste. However, there is an unfortunate side effect to this range. To put it delicately, the sugar substitute they use in their products causes painful gas. A quick search on Google revealed that this is extremely common in products containing sugar alcohol. So I guess you have to decide whether eating these products is worth the unpleasant (and very painful) side effects. Personally, there’s no way I’m buying this range again!

I tried a sample of Coles Simply Less Mineral Water with Orange and Grapefruit.
It has a definite aftertaste of artificial sweetener and yet the bottle says no
artificial sweetener.  This aftertaste stayed with me for a good half hour which
is the same result that other artificially sweetened drinks has.
