The final round for 2013 of the Coles Junior Landcare Garden Grants program will close on 2 August and schools and youth organisations are encouraged to submit their applications before the closing date.

Since 2008, the porgram has provided $1.7 million in grants to create garden projects that engage kids and encourage them to learn about a sustainable environment.

Schools, kindergartens, childcare centres and community groups involved with young people are eligible to apply for these popular grants which have now benefitted over 1670 organisations.

Round 2 recipients have just been announced and the wide range of successful projects include an aquaponics project in Queensland, an organic berry farm in Victoria and even a dinosaur patch in WA.

Amy Gillett, Landcare Australia Partnerships Manager, says it’s a great to experience learning in an outdoor environment.

“The program gives schools and community groups the opportunity to approach education from a different perspective by involving kids in every step of the project while they learn about sustainability and gain some practical new skills,” she said.

Organisations all across Australia have been awarded grants, which help children become involved in learning about where food comes from and how to reuse and recycle.

The final round of applications for the Coles Junior Landcare Garden Grant program closes on Friday 2 August at 5pm and application forms can be downloaded from www.juniorlandcare.com.au
