COVID-19 lockdowns in states like Victoria and NSW have necessitated a move to remote and distance learning for the indefinite future. Many working parents of primary school students are already reporting that they are struggling to recreate an engaging learning environment at home.

LEGO® Education hopes to combat this challenge with the launch of LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential, a new product designed to spark a passion for STEAM in primary school students through playful problem-solving and storytelling, and to help them become resilient, independent learners.

About LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential

  • Designed for ages 6+
  • Costs $464.95 Excl. GST per set, which can be shared by up to two students at a time
  • Includes 449 LEGO® bricks (including replacement elements)
  • Study storage with box with color-coded sorting trays
  • 5 hardware components
  • 5 curriculum units with 7-8 lessons of 45 minutes each
  • Each unit contains 6-10 hours of educational content and 30+ minutes of language arts and math extensions for each lesson
With 50 combined hours of educational content, SPIKE Essential combines age-appropriate and icon-and word-based block coding with simple hardware — including an intelligent Hub, motors, a Light Matrix, and a colour Sensor — to bring STEAM concepts to life via the student-facing app. Students are guided through storytelling to build new concepts, whether they are at home or at school.

Learning through play or ‘playful learning’ is one of the most important ways in which young children gain knowledge and skills, says Dr. Jenny Nash, Head of Education Impact at LEGO Education. By creating a space for active and playful hands-on activities for their kids, parents can facilitate a stimulating environment at home for learning, while fostering independence and engagement skills.
