Whether it was the world’s first known make-up artist, Cleopatra with the stunning kohl-rimmed eyes, or emulating the looks of beautiful contemporary women, cosmetics and make-up have long been important to many women. Almost 30% of women want to attain Jessica Biel’s look; another 30% aspire to Jennifer Lopez’s glow; and 13% like the smoky-eyed look of Mila Kunis.

According to Eva Oreskovich, Director of Marketing at Paris Presents Incorporated there is an almost universal desire for women to put their best face forward.

“Make-up is an individual experience. It's all about feeling confident and beautiful, however you define it. Interestingly, there seems to be a gap between makeup usage and application knowledge."

Ms Oreskovich said that women tend to feel more confident when they have make-up on.

“It is why it is one of the most time-consuming things a woman can do in the morning.” She said 40% of women women spend 15 minutes or more of their time to apply cosmetics and 37% spend between 12 and 15 minutes.

“I work in the cosmetics industry so we’re happy they do so, but if more women knew more of the basics of applying make-up ‘to go’ quickly, they could gain some precious time in the morning. I know that’s especially important as a young mum.”

While the significant majority of women aged18 years and older wear make-up, many from early teenage, only a relatively small number consider themselves ‘knowledgeable’ about how to do it properly.

Here are some top tips for applying long-lasting make-up to get you through the day in around five minutes. “It might take longer to begin with, but you will get it down," says Ms Oreskovich.

1.  Use a tinted moisturiser that has SPF. These are great timesavers. Instead of applying a moisutriser and foundation, you can do it all-in-one. Keep the individual products  - that is, a moisturiser and a foundation - for really special occasions in the evening. There’s lots of good dual use products on the market. Find the one that feels right for you.

2.  Next, concentrate on your eyes and your lips because they are the two features which are noticed and also the key to how you look.

3.  For eyes, use a neutral and soft colour to enhance your complexion. For daytime, don’t make it too matte or too dewy. You can make eyeshadow last longer by slightly wetting the applicator.

4.  For lips, what do you want to achieve? More defined lips? Then use a dark colour. If you want them to appear larger, use a light colour.

5.  Rather than different products, use a multiuse highlighter that you can use on eyelids, under the brow bone, on cheekbones and on lips to add some light and illuminate your features.

6.  Use mascara and eyeliner lightly. You don’t want to look as if you’re ready for a ‘Goth’ night out. But both help complete a face and your eyes are key to looking refreshed and awake.

7.  If you use an eyelash curler, blast it with hot air from your hair dryer for a few seconds to make it curl even better.

8.  Always spray some perfume on the inside of your elbows behind your ears and on your chest. It's about feeling confident and a beautiful scent - preferably your signature scent - helps.

9.  Make sure you have an everyday make-up bag which can go from home to gym to work to on the road, using the same products to transition you during the day.
