We live in what some people call the ‘hyper-information’ era. The tag refers to the amount of information that is currently being produced and distributed at an ever-increasing pace and worldwide scale. Nowadays, there’s a massive, virtually infinite amount of information available; as a result, many concepts that were once thought as ‘rock solid’ are crumbling under the weight of new evidence.

Advances are being made in every field - from space exploration to microbiology and gender studies – and the scope of the improvements reaches topics related to parenting: education, values, social norms, behavior studies, family-related topics. We think it’s an exciting era, filled with challenges and opportunities when it comes to improving our parenting skills; thus, we’ve compiled a list of the best TED talks covering key subjects that aim to enhance the way we act and live as parents. Here it goes:

1. Rufus Griscom + Alisa Volkman: Let's talk parenting taboos

Rufus and Alisa offer their perspective on the darker sides of parenting, focusing on four major issues. Their story is a compelling one, and it may help the viewer to overcome some low points that can appear somewhere along the road of parenting.

2. Andrew Solomon: Love, no matter what

Mr. Solomon was a different son, and he is a different father nowadays. His talk aims to a difficult subject: the expectations that we build to ourselves (as parents) when it comes to our children. Life, turns out, can take different paths than the ones we expect.

3. Kathryn Schulz: On Being Wrong

Kathryn Schulz talks about the importance of keeping our eyes and ears open, and to listen to our children before taking a rigid, know-it-all stand. Families often are a diverse bunch, and listening can improve the dynamics to unsuspected levels.

4. Michelle Obama: A plea for education

United States’ first lady talks about the key role that education plays – beyond borders, ethnic backgrounds and resources. A must-see for every mother that knows life can come with rough edges. Education is always an answer.

A talk that addresses the bullying issue, from the perspective of an adult that suffered as a kid. How does bullying affect our children’s future, their expectations, and their career choices? An interesting talk that can help parents educate their children to be tolerant, respectful and mindful.

Mr. Benjamin is a ‘mathemagician’, and shows us his act on stage, at TED. This video can be seen with our children; in fact, that is the goal: to make mathematics attractive for kids. Studies show that children in many countries are falling behind in this area – due to fear, mostly – and Arthur Benjamin does a tremendous job in attempting to reverse this tendencies.

Steve is a photographer, and he uses his expertise to explain the importance of small routines and how they affect the health status of families. Small things and conscious acts of parenting can make a big difference in our relationships and how they evolve over time.
