Watching yourself change and a new life begin is an experience that compares to nothing else. Often these changes can be uncomfortable and for some people painful. Back pain is a common complaint amongst pregnant women.
What Causes Pregnancy Back Pain?
There are many changes occurring to your body during each pregnancy trimester which can contribute to pain. As your progress through your pregnancy, many of your body’s ligaments and joints soften, giving your uterus room to expand without causing any permanent damage. Sometimes strains do occur; this is the major contributor to early pregnancy back pain.
Pregnancy lower back pain is often experienced in the later stages. As the baby grows, your center of gravity shifts and the way you carry the weight of your body changes. This can often lead to discomfort and back pain.
These changes can also lead to sciatica, which is when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve, causing pain to the lower back, hips, buttocks and legs. This nerve is about as thick as your finger and runs from the base of your spine to your legs.
Sometimes the strain that pregnancy places on the body simply exaggerates existing problems. Problems that you may not have noticed before can become far more uncomfortable and painful.
Reducing Back Pain During Pregnancy
There are many steps you can take to reduce back pain or even avoid it altogether during your pregnancy. Keeping tabs on your posture is an excellent start. Maintaining a straight back with your shoulders back and your chin up is advisable. Make sure you are sitting on comfortable chairs and sleeping on a good mattress.
Keeping active can help reduce pregnancy lower back pain. Swimming, yoga and walking will all help you stay fit while not placing unnecessary strain on your body. A hot water bottle or heat pack can help you sleep.
