The star and her fiance Eric Johnson welcomed their daughter Maxwell Drew into the world on May 1.

Simpson has introduced her first child to fans by appearing on the front cover of People magazine in the US, with Australians due to see the shots in Who Weekly on Friday.

The star is seen beaming as she clutches the little girl, who boasts a shock of brown hair. The tot has a cream dress with brown neck panelling on and appears to be sleeping.

"Life has completely changed," Simpson says.

"From how I sleep to what I think about, Maxwell has definitely taken over everything!"

The new parents still can't believe they have a baby together. They think Maxwell has taken after Simpson when it comes to her looks, but is more like her dad in personality.

"We stare at her all the time," Simpson said.

"We can't get enough!"

The 31-year-old singer gave birth to Maxwell via caesarean section and is still recovering from the operation. She is breastfeeding the new arrival, which also took some getting used to.

"It's the worst if I have to pump and give Eric a bottle to give her. I miss holding her and having that closeness," she said.

Simpson says her first Mother's Day will always be one to remember after Johnson presented the pop star with a personalised locket.

Johnson made the day extra special by designing a special diamond pendant for Simpson, featuring the baby's emerald birthstone.

He also had additional copies of the necklace made for Simpson's singer sister Ashlee, Maxwell's grandmothers and her godmother, Simpson's best pal Cacee Cobb.

And Simpson says "super dad" Johnson is already a natural at being a parent, adding, "He has found his calling. Maxwell's definitely going to be a daddy's girl."
