It seems most women are now happy to put their career ahead of getting married, with 66 per cent saying they would rather receive a promotion than a proposal.

Being financially savvy is seen by most as being more important than getting hitched, with 82 per cent of single women over the age of 25 agreeing they would rather have a big bank balance than a big white wedding.

Striking a blow for die-hard romantics, some 71 per cent also said they would prefer a trip overseas to a trip down the aisle.

The study of 1,054 Australian men and women found that 39 per cent of single people believe getting married quickly can slow down their move up the career ladder, with 61 per cent saying they would prefer a long engagement.

The survey was commissioned by Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to tie in with the DVD release of The Five Year Engagement.

"Similar to the stereotypical power women of the 80s, society has seen the rise of the alpha female, a woman who wants to call the shots in the relationship and not be pigeonholed as the wife," said relationship expert Dr Nikki Goldstein.

"Furthermore, having children is likely to be more disruptive to a woman's career than a man's, so for career oriented women, love is certainly changing."
