The adidas Run Around The World event involves students completing at least 1 kilometre each to create an Australian record of the most students running/walking on the same day.

With one week to go before the day, there are already over 150,000 students Australia-wide registered to participate – equivalent to more than three laps around the world.

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation's National Executive Director, Mr Jeffrey Emmel said that it is absolutely critical that schools embrace a curriculum that promotes active and healthy living and he was delighted that the council and adidas were able to join forces on National Health & Physical Education Day to present this event.

“The new Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education is also going to emphasise how students can develop personal and social capabilities, skills for lifelong participation in sport and recreation and how they will learn to take responsibility for their own health and the health of others.”

Mr Emmel said that teachers also tell us how important it is that students are active while at school and how this makes a difference to their attitudes to learning and achievement in the classroom.

“Health and physical education is viewed by parents and teachers as a significant experience for students at a time when sedentary lifestyles threaten the very essence of their health and well-being.“

Around the country, many schools are working hard to provide quality health and physical education programs for their students and have planned a diverse range of other activities to celebrate National Health & Physical Education Day.
