Tomorrow is World Food Revolution Day – the brainchild of British chef and TV star, Jamie Oliver, who’s known for his efforts in eliminating unhealthy, processed food from our diets – but especially from school lunches.

It’s a global day of action to help get people better connected with fresh, healthy food by celebrating good food, cooking skills, good eating habits and, of course, eating it!

Jamie says one of the best ways to encourage children to eat healthily are smoothies made of fresh produce, especially in ‘cool’ colours.

“Smoothies are usually the easiest way of encouraging your kids to try different types of fruit,” he says. “Kids love to get involved with making them as well because they can chuck it all in and blend it themselves.”

Here’s Jamie’s recipe for one of his kids’ favourites – Kiwi, Ginger and Banana Smoothie.

Ingredients

Serves 4

3 kiwi fruit

4 tablespoons oats

1 banana

8 ice cubes (if required)

200ml semi-skimmed milk

250ml fat-free natural yoghurt

½ centimetre piece fresh ginger, finely grated

honey to taste

Method

Trim the ends of the kiwi fruit and stand them up on the kitchen bench. Slice off the skin in vertical strips with a sharp knife and discard.

Place the flesh in a juicer or very good blender.

Add the remaining ingredients, apart from the honey, and whiz for around 30 seconds, or until smooth.

Pour into 4 tall glasses and sweeten with honey if required.
