Did you know that colour has a direct connection to how we feel? Could you imagine sleeping in a bright red bedroom, or trying to relax in a bright green one? Every colour and the application of said colour has an incredible impact on our emotions. This is why it is so important that you pay close attention to the colours you are choosing when you paint the rooms in your home. Today, we have a look at the colour psychology behind redecorating your kitchen.

The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home, where families spend hours of their day cooking, having meals and socialising with one another. If you’re looking to redecorate your kitchen, here are some ways in which you can embrace colour psychology and create the ambience you are looking for.

1. Consider Red Appliances

Did you know that all over the world, food companies and restaurants utilise the colour red more than they do any other colour? Red is a colour known to stimulate appetite, making it the ideal colour scheme to apply to your kitchen. If you’re not bold enough to go with red walls, we highly recommend purchasing appliances that are red in colour to create a central theme in your kitchen. Red stand mixers, toasters, microwaves, pots and pans and kettles are a fantastic way of decorating your kitchen and arousing the appetite at the same time.

2. Splash A Coat of White Paint

Whilst having pops of red with the aid of appliances can help create an appetite, you also want the kitchen to be a room in which everyone can feel relaxed. If your family enjoys winding down in the kitchen over a glass of wine at the end of the day, why not consider painting your kitchen walls white? White walls in a kitchen offer a timeless look and can encourage mental sharpness and clarity of mind. White walls also create an orderly look in your kitchen which is sometimes important if you have dozens of dishes, glasses or appliances all over the place.

3. Go Dark When Light is Limited

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a kitchen with a large window that allows sunshine to pour in. If you find that light is limited in your kitchen, we highly recommend redecorating and embracing a darker colour palette. Whilst this may seem counterproductive, a dark-themed kitchen creates less of a stark contrast that a white kitchen would in low-light environments. Colours such as light blue compliment both dark and well-lit spaces, whilst shades of dark yellow compliment darker, less sunny kitchens.

4. Yellow Brings Out Your Culinary Creativity

If you’re someone who just loves trying out new recipes and channelling your creativity through recipes and food, then yellow is the colour for you. Yellow is a colour which stimulates creativity and intellectual energy, making it the ideal colour scheme for someone who loves getting innovative in the kitchen. Yellow is also a fantastic colour that can fill you with energy whilst you’re having breakfast in the morning - the perfect start to any day.

5. Weather Conditions Matter More Than You Think

Did you know that choosing colours such as blue and green are a fantastic option for those who live in a warm or tropical climate? The psychological illusion of these cooler colours can trick your system into feeling cooler in a warm climate. If you live somewhere that experiences extremely cold winters, choosing warmer colours such as red, orange and yellow can bring an increased sense of coziness to your kitchen.

____________

And there you have it! A number of ways in which you can utilise colour psychology when looking to redecorate your kitchen. By playing with colour and paying attention to how it makes you feel, you’ll be able to create the ideal ambience in your kitchen in no time.
