Being a new mum is one of the most fulfilling yet tough experiences you will ever encounter in your lifetime. No matter how much research you do before the baby is born, nothing can really prepare you for motherhood until it happens. You’re bound to feel overwhelming tiredness, isolation, and changes in your body, which can all have an impact on your mood. However, putting the steps in place on how to get your confidence back as a new mum is something you need to focus on, or you could be facing a serious dip in mood.

1. Keep a positive frame of mind

The first few months after birth can be a real challenge for your state of mind, as you deal with the overwhelming mental and physical effects that a baby has on you. You’ll experience hormonal changes, which means that mood swings are frequent and it’s also normal to feel a little down, despite your new bundle of joy being bought into the world.

Try not to give in to these negative feelings. Remember, you’re the same woman you always were, and this is a strange period that will pass. Believe in your ability as mum and aim to put coping mechanisms to improve your state of mind.

2. Take pride in your appearance

As a new mum, it’s likely you’ll be putting your self-appearance as a last resort on your priorities list. Therefore, you may be feeling extremely unconfident in the way you look after you’ve given birth. Try and find some time to make an effort in your appearance; whether it be changing your hairstyle, investing in IPL Hair Removal, a day at the spa, or purchasing some new clothes. If you take pride in your own appearance, you’re bound to boost your self-confidence.

3. Spend quality time with your other half

You probably don’t want to let your new baby out of your sight for even a minute in the early days, but it’s important you and your other half take some time out to enjoy one another’s company. The arrival of a new baby is a huge life adjustment for you both, in which you’ve been solely focused on parenting, with no time spared for your relationship. Your date night doesn’t have to be anything too overstated; just use it as an occasion to remind yourselves how much you love each other.

4. Socialise

With all of your attention being focused on the baby, it’s very unlikely you’ve had much of an opportunity to catch up with friends. Having a baby can often be a very lonely experience, and you may feel trapped when having to stay at home for the majority of the day in the first few weeks and months. If you’re struggling to meet up with your existing friends throughout the day due to clashing schedules, try and branch out into new circles by joining mummy and baby groups. This gives you the opportunity to meet other mums who are in your boat and in which you can make new friends.
