Body love:

Women should love their body as much as their baby writes Jen Dugard.

Australia is in the midst of the biggest baby boom in history – in 2011, more than 300,000 babies were born, blitzing the 250,000 of the original baby boom. More babies, means more mothers needing simple, step-by-step advice to regain their body and sense of self after giving birth.

I've had seven years' health industry experience and five years as a mother, so I know irst-hand how the pressures of parenthood can negatively impact the health of mums.

The top five factors that prevent mums from maintaining their best health are:

1. A lack of time for themselves – you go from nurturing yourself through pregnancy to being so wrapped up in your new baby that you forget to take any time out to rest and rejuvenate.

2. Not knowing where to start to get your body back. When is it safe to do so? What is safe?

3. Confused about food. What is the best thing to eat? When should you eat?

4. How can you implement an exercise and diet routine without some external support?

5. What's best for your baby?

Common mum mistakes

But it's not just about finding the motivation –– a lot of mums aren't aware of the issues specific to post-natal exercise. A lot of women fall into the trap of trying so hard to getting back to their post-baby self that they end up doing more harm than good.

The fact is, women's bodies change with a baby; and your body needs time.

So how do we overcome these sticking points?

Here are my five key philosophies to help mothers discover their best post baby body and sense of self.

1. Take time out for yourself because a happy mum is a happy baby.

2.  Rebuild from the inside out.

3.  Nurture from the inside out.

4.  Preparation and consistency are key.

5.  Teach your children great habits.

When I am happy and looked after, I am a much better mother to my children, wife to my husband and better person overall. I achieved the best shape of my life after having my children, without sacrificing my life and relationship with my babies. The key is learning how to let go of guilt when you need to time to yourself, and to do something for yourself.
