Accidents happen - and when they do, you need to be sure you have the right skills to deal with them. However, many household accidents and disasters in the home can actually be avoided. Part of life is learning to deal with problems yourself, but there are disasters that require the services of a professional to clear up the mess. When accidents like this do happen, do you know who to call for help?

Locksmiths on Speed Dial

Security at home is important, and so when your little one accidentally shuts the door with your keys inside the house, it should be difficult to gain access to your home. You could smash a window or try to force the lock of the front, back or patio doors but there are two problems with this: expensive repairs and the possibility you won’t gain access. The answer here is to have the number of reputable locksmiths in Melbourne on speed dial on your phone so when the worst happens – which it has for many busy Mums and Dads – you know who to call.

Have Vehicle Assistance

Staying on the subject of keys, kids love playing with car keys, which can spell disaster, especially when they leave your keys in the car. Most car manufacturers make their vehicles with an automatic locking mechanism if the car is left unlocked for a certain length of time. In some cases, this can be a matter of minutes. Some manufacturers include a spare key in the remote. Or, if a window is open, it may be possible to unlock the vehicle by poking something long through the gap to nudge the locks. If not, it’s essential to have vehicle assistance that includes gaining access when locked out of your car. With one call, a technician will quickly and easily gain access without damaging your vehicle.

Know Basic First Aid

According to KidSafe, a common injury for children in Australia leading to hospitalisation are injuries related to falls. Children who fall between one level and another – e.g. down a flight of stairs, from a buggy etc. - are likely to require first aid and hospital treatment. Having basic first aid knowledge is essential as part of keeping your kids safe in and around the home. A first aid course will cover how to cope with sprains and cuts, as well as dealing with choking, burns and scalds.

Fence off the Pool

According to the World Health Organisation, drowning was the leading cause of unintentional injury which proved fatal in children aged one to three years of age in Australia. Even with regulation fencing, young children can still sometimes gain access to pool area. The results are devastating for all concerned.

As well as regulation fencing, have a lock on the gate when the area is not being used, which is vital when the pool is out of sight. If a new pool is being built, it is worth placing it directly in line of sight from several vantage points from the property.

Toddler-Proof Furniture

Children are eager to explore the world around them and whilst you want them to learn by their own adventures, you don’t want a mistake to be fatal. Children climb, and furniture makes for a great climbing frame. Unfortunately, toppling furniture results in serious injury for many Australian children. There are many ways to toddler proof furniture but in all cases, it means fixing the items firmly to the wall with appropriate fixings.

Kids enrich our lives and watching them learn through play and social interaction is fascinating. Even so, all parents know that they can’t supervise their children all the time and that even when supervised, they still have a habit of getting into things they shouldn’t! Know the hazards and prevent them as far as possible with the handy tips above and you may get them through the early years a little easier.
