Being pregnant is a magical time in a woman's life. Growing a precious little human inside of us has got to be one of the most empowering things a woman can do, but unfortunately with pregnancy our teeth can suffer.

With the increased production of hormones in your body your teeth will suffer due to the hormones affecting the bodies response to plaque - Resulting in increased tooth decay and gum disease.

Not to mention the problems that arise for those women who experience a lot of vomiting during pregnancy.

Melbourne's leading dentist Dr Giulia D'Anna and founder of iDental has put together her top tips on how to look after your teeth while pregnant.

Some tips:

  • Get a dental check up in the 2nd trimester. This is safest for you and your growing bub.
  • Bleeding gums are really common during pregnancy, but don’t ignore them. Go to you dentist a couple of times if needed whilst pregnant so that we can help get them under control.
  • You pass your oral bacteria onto your child when it is born, so you want to make sure that your mouth is as healthy as possible. There are bacteria specific to decay and specific to gum disease. Regular dental visits will help reduce their numbers and give your child the best start in life.
  • Don’t wait for a toothache. We want to ensure that you are as healthy as possible, so get little things checked before they become big ones. A toothache makes things a whole lot more difficult because it can be hard to avoid X-rays and pain killers when a toothache happens. So by getting a broken filling fixed early, we can usually prevent having to do extra treatment.
