Being a loving mother is a responsibility. A busy day is filled with numerous tasks. It involves taking care of the family, doing household chores and running different errands. According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, in 2016, Aussie mothers spent 16 to 24 hours a week doing housework, including the extra time is spent taking care of their husbands and their children or running errands. Not to mention, many Australian parents ditch formal child-care service as they don’t want to miss out on time spent with their growing children.

But with the busy lives mothers faced every day, there is one thing that they should not forget - self-care. A caring mother should take care of herself primarily. And self-care means not only physically but also the mothers’ well-being. Here are some ways you can take care of yourself as a mother.

Schedule some “me” time

Pampering yourself does not have to be costly. This can be as simple as having allotted time for yourself, doing your hobbies or exploring new things you want to do. Some prefer a quiet time doing meditation and prayers or just reading or relaxing in a cozy hammock. If you want to be more energized, you can do some exercise or jogging in the park. Have some cash to splurge on? You may opt to have a day at the spa or salon.

In short, it can be anything that you want to do using the time you set for yourself. Just be sure that you’ve scheduled a time and a friend or sister to look after the kids while you are away.

Go ahead and treat yourself

Finding the best gifts for your mom and yourself starts with interests and hobbies. Perhaps you may even find a gift that you can do together, such as matching jewelry, taking a class, or even going on a Mother-Daughter trip for two. Giving gifts can be one way to express your gratitude and it can even be good for you as a giver. Based on a study published in PubMed, research concludes that there is much more joy and satisfaction in giving than receiving.

Build stronger connections

Spend time with the people you love. It can be your husband, your kids, your parents, your siblings or your girlfriends. Share with them some fun times, relax or laugh, play or just chat. These can bring joy to reduce symptoms of depression that will also emotionally restore you. It will also serve as a motivation to embrace motherhood and appreciate the happiness and the sweet sacrifices that go with it.

Being a mother should make a woman feel happy and complete. Sadly, to others, the busy life mothers take make them feel like losing their own identities and self-worth, feeling left-out and uncared for. This should not be the case. Being a good mother should not equate with self-neglect but start with self-care.
