Call for redirection of childcare rebate from parents to providers:

Australia’s largest childcare group, Goodstart has told the Gillard government its reforms are costing too much to implement and providers need more funding to keep price rises under control.

An executive summary of the submission by Goodstart, obtained by The Australian, calls for a "mandatory redirection" of the childcare rebate from parents to providers.

The group also calls for increased investment to support the National Quality Standards as well as payment of professional wages.

The Australians reports that Goodstart says it strongly supports the reforms, but there is "no refuting" their introduction would continue to increase operating costs as they unfolded over the next four years.

It says the government needs to compensate centres for the reforms or accept that price rises will be passed on to parents, making fees skyrocket.

Last month, Julia Gillard conceded parents needed relief from rising childcare costs and is considering a shake-up of the system. Goodstart says funding needs to be simplified.

What do you think of the call for the childcare rebate to redirected from parents to providers?

Of course the providers would like the rebate to go to them instead of the families. I seriously hope the rebate continues to go to parents, and not the centres.

Oh hello? Hasn’t this mob Goodstart heard of consumer choice? It would be a backward step to take power out of parents’ hands in deciding what they want to choose.

Thanks for making the effort to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and really like learning more on this subject. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind upgrading your website with more information? It is useful for me.

I also hope for that, rebates going to parents instead of the centres. Why would you not give the power to parents when it comes to their choices?
