Do you have a faulty product that you've been meaning to return for a while?

Perhaps it's a digital camera that stopped working after twelve months? Or the software you ordered online but didn't install properly? Or a modem from a telecommunications company that breaks down too much? You have a right as a consumer to a refund, repair or replacement.

According to consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, you have a right to a refund, repair or replacement when a product:

  • doesn't do what it is supposed to do
  • doesn't do what you were told it would do
  • isn't of an acceptable quality, and/or
  • hasn't lasted for a reasonable length of time.

All you need to have the product attended to is the proof of purchase. You don't need a receipt or original packaging.

CHOICE has also prepared a handy guide to shopping whether it's in-store or online, covering topics such as:

  • Refunds - don't take 'no' for an answer
  • Warranties - should you buy that extended warranty
  • Online shopping - beware the traps
  • Digital downloads - how to get around the pricey roadblocks that online traders set up for Australian shoppers
  • Interest-free deals - it's not really interest-free, but what are your alternatives?
  • Gift cards - the gift that can keep on taking
  • Managing your debt - go on, do it, for one and for all. Get that debt away for ever!

A copy of the guide is available at CHOICE.
