Smell is the strongest of the senses, and is the one best able to influence brain activity.

We all love a spritz of a heavenly scent floating throughout our homes, but what fragrances are the best to improve your mood and enlighten that dreaded feeling of stress and fatigue? Here are the top five scents to help you find the right one to suit your mood.

1. Lavender

Lavender can be your own little purple saviour; it can help to calm your mind whilst alleviating emotional mood swings. Add some fresh lavender to your bedroom to help calm your mind before sleep, or add some lavender candles, reed diffusers or perfume oils to your home to create a calm and tranquil environment.

2. Citrus

Unleashing a citrus fragrance throughout your home can alleviate anxiety and depression and will also neutralise unwanted odours. A great summer favourite, scents of citrus can assist with mental fatigue, headaches and improving your overall mood. The refreshing fragrance of citrus is also perfect for uplifting and revitalising the mind.

3. Rosemary

When work has taken its toll, you may need to get some rosemary for your home. Rosemary has been linked to improved memory retention and can fight mental-exhaustion, fatigue and headaches. Purchase a plant for your window sill so you have a bunch easily accessible anytime you are feeling stressed or finding it hard to remember the shopping list.

4. Peppermint

Peppermint has a powerful fresh scent and is known for it’s many therapeutic properties. Perfect for brainstorming and studying, peppermint can invigorate the mind, stimulating clear thinking and promoting concentration. It is also a great scent to boost energy levels and increase alertness!

5. Camomile

Camomile is a very popular homeopathic remedy that has been known to help combat insomnia as it relaxes muscles and can even relax brainwaves. Inhaling the aroma of camomile tea can calm jittery nerves and help ease anxiety. Camomile has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and can aid sleep as it reduces the impact of inflammation brought on by common allergens.
