Domestos and unicef partnership - motherpedia

1 in 3 women worldwide do not have access to a toilet and are forced to go out in the open. To help address this issue every specially marked bottle of Domestos sold from July to December 2016 contributes directly to tackling the global sanitation crisis.

Through its global partnership with UNICEF, Domestos has committed to helping 25 million people have access to proper sanitation by 2020. Women are particularly vulnerable to the sanitation crisis as the lack of access to a safe toilet exposes them to the risk of violence and harassment, and affects school attendance – thereby perpetuating cycles of inequality. Women and girls living without a toilet spend 97 billion hours each year looking for private place to go.

“Domestos is passionate about supporting this campaign as we know how vital toilets are in empowering women and giving them a better future. We are urging all Australians to take notice and take action. We have committed to build toilets in communities where they are needed and every bottle of Domestos sold makes a contribution,” said Krstina Nicolai, Domestos Brand Manager.

“The partnership is enabling UNICEF to reach vulnerable girls, women and families around the world to provide access to proper sanitation facilities to reduce the spread of disease and improve education outcomes,” said Felicity Wever, Head of International Programs at UNICEF Australia. “Access to a toilet can be life-changing for girls who would otherwise skip school during menstruation and for women who risk their safety simply to find a safe and private place to relieve themselves.”

THE ISSUE: 1 in 3 women worldwide don't have access to a toilet and are forced to go out in the open where they risk shame, disease, harassment, attack and even rape

DOMESTOS & UNICEF PARTNERSHIP:

  • UNICEF and Domestos have partnered and are committed to help 25 million people have access to proper sanitation by 2020
  • Women and girls living without any toilets spend 97 billion hours each year looking for a place to go to the toilet. Children and women are especially affected as they risk shame, harassment and event attack. They have to walk kilometres each day just to find a clean and safe toilet.
  • Access to a safe toilet keeps women in the workplace. A lack of hygienic toilet in the workplace can cause women to stay home during menstruation. This affects their ability to take on paid work and to earn a livelihood and provide for their families
  • Through behavioural change and building toilets the global partnership between Domestos and UNICEF has given access to over 5 million people to a toilet
  • The world cannot to afford to ignore the sanitation crisis and the heavy burden if places on women and children. The simple act of providing clean, safe toilets has many flow-on benefits to these communities - it improves women's confidence, nutrition, productivity, gender equality and tackles poverty.
  • 2.5 billion people miss out on basic sanitation while an estimated 1 billion people live without access to any toilet at all.
  • During the first 3 years of the partnership, 1.3 million pole were reached and of that number, 655, 000 now live in communities that have access to clean and safe toilets
  • Only 46% of schools in the least developed and low-income countries have adequate sanitation facilities.
  • 2.5 billion people don't have access to proper sanitation.
  • Every day around 2,000 mothers lose a child due to diarrhoea caused by a lack of access to safe toilets and clean water.
  • On any given day more than 800 million women between the ages of 15 and 49 years old are menstruating which causes shames and health risks if there is no access to a toilet. It makes women and girls miss six days a month from school and work.

THE ACHIEVEMENTS: The Domestos and UNICEF partnership is now in it's fourth year. As a result of the first three years of the partnership, 1,320,000 people have been reached with behaviour change sanitation programs. Of these 655,000 people are now living in communities with toilets. They now benefit from improved health, safety and dignity.

BENEFITS OF TOILETS: Toilets do more than provide a safe place to go. They keep women and communities healthy and able to stay in work and school and they prevent the contamination of their food and water supplies which leads to disease.

ACTION: Domestos and UNICEF are asking all Australians to buy a specially marked bottle of Domestos from July to December 2016 that contributes directly to the sanitation crisis. More information.
