Helping you fit in exercise.:

It's hard to find time to exercise with a new baby, but it is possible.

When I finished up work for maternity leave, I thought I would have all the time in the world.  When I thought of what I achieved in a working day, I thought it was reasonable to transpose that productivity into my new life.

Of course, I didn’t account for how the day would slip away from me, between playing with my beautiful daughter, feeding her and then settling her to sleep the day quickly passes by with few things ticked off the list!
In reflecting on my days and my expectations, I realise I’m now content at the end of the day if my daughter is happy, she’s had enough sleep, I’ve got some exercise, dinner is organised, and a I have a few of the ubiquitous loads of washing completed.
It dawned on me the days I don’t get my exercise in are the days that seem to unravel, and there’s been a lot of trial and error in working out how best to fit in that exercise.  It’s not always perfect, but once I acknowledged exercise made me a better mother and I stopped feeling guilty about taking 45 minutes of the day for me.
My daughter loves being out and about and that makes it far easier for me to go for walks or runs with the pram, this won’t always be the case of course, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts!
I thought I’d share with you some tips which have enabled me to fit in exercise with my new bub:
  • swap coffee catch ups for walking/exercising catch ups;

  • meet other mothers at the pool or gym and take turns in looking after each other’s babies to get some exercise in; this also means you don’t have to spend money on childcare while you exercise and you can always be with your baby (of course, there are some great classes out there that include childcare in them and I know people who have sworn by these classes)

  • exercise early in the day to avoid other errands or problems getting in the way; the day can quickly unravel and exercise is usually the thing that gets dropped from the to do list, if it’s out of the way early, then you’ve done something for yourself;

  • find a local yoga or pilates class for mums and bubs, or start one with some friends

  • develop a circuit to do while your baby sleeps, it doesn’t have to be sophisticated or technical, sit ups, pushups and squats are all great ways to get your muscle tone back after having a bub;

  • if you can’t fit in a long walk, do two shorter walks; my little one is much happier child at that horrible late afternoon phase if she’s out about in the baby carrier or pram watching other people, come to think of it, so am I!

Finally, incessant images of celebrities dropping their pregnancy weight in next to no time can make new mums feel like they need to lose the weight pronto. Remember that for celebrities their appearance is a business and often a PR requirement, there are so many other important things to focus on during your babies first months, don’t lose focus on the amazing job you’ve done getting your baby into this world.
